26yrs old, want to join infantry Marines, 1yr left in college. Advice?

Hello there sir, I’m 26yrs old I want to join the marines(infantry) thinking of taking asvab next month, I currently have 1year left college but the thing is I cant afford anymore…its 18,000 per semester. Anyhow benefits are not my main reason for enlisting, I just wanted to become respected marine eversince few years back and later become police officer. My question is are there gonna be big differences between with diploma and without diploma? And if I do enlist this year would I be able to see combat? probably not huh? it would suck if just stay in boots till end of contract. This may sound immature but thats how i feel yea so what are your recommendation? thankyou!!

If you MUST join despite all the evidence showing that it is a horrible idea. Finish College first and then join as an Officer instead. This is a much better approach vs going to school and quitting when you only have 1 year left. Infantry has nothing to offer you. It may seem cool, and people may think that those guys are cool. But they are not cool at all. Not one bit. And they all know it.

Spoken like a true POG. Much like the OP, I had two years of college left before I joined. I ran out of money as well. While the officer route is preferable, especially with how close you are to your bachelors, there’s nothing wrong with going enlisted. If you’re interested in the infantry road, the one I took, then you’re in for a ride. There’s a lot of training, not a lot of free time, and you’re usually subjected to bullshit from the people with more experience than you. With that being said,

I did two tours to the Helmand province, and they were some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. POG (Personnel Other than Grunt) despise us because we have egos that go with the experiences we have. So you need to learn to deal with them attempting to shaft you at every possible turn when you need paperwork done.

You won’t see combat. It is pretty much over. However, with Afghanistan winding down, there’s a lot of opportunities to get on a boat and see places like Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa as part of a MEU with your infantry battalion. At your age while being enlisted, ask your Recruiter about Debt Forgiveness (If you have any) and the Marine Corp Scholarship (A solid bonus to your GI Bill) before signing anywhere. Put a lot in to your TSP, spend sparingly, and you can leave the Marines four years later with a lot of money. Remember, living in the barracks means your food and your room and board is paid for. All your income is effectively disposable. Save it, and you’ll be in it good.

Zietie has some pretty sound advice. As a POG myself (but everyone loves the Data Marine), yea the grunt option won’t give you much time or opportunity for school, although it’s possible. You might also look into a POG type MOS, or get a fucking loan for the last year and then decide. Putting it off when you’re this close is a tough call, but if you can’t make the tuition, then fuck it. First year in the Suck is just that. suck. But you CAN make the most out of an enlistment if you give it any kind of half-assed effort. Zirtie’s last paragraph is just fucking gold. If you do join, do that and you won’t regret it later.
        P.S.
Suicidal_Father_Marine is 99% of what’s wrong with the Marine Corps.

I don’t wanna sound like a complete dick but I’m sorry to say that pretty much EVERY servicemember that I met that joined that late in life was a complete and total loser who couldn’t hack civilian life. sorry but people need to hear that. I suggest joining the reserves or guard. ROTC would also be a excellent choice. But joining the U.S. moron corps is gonna be a helluva big mistake for you. The Marines are looking for a few, dumb kids. The training is not built for men but for children. You CANNOT under any circumstance convince a smart, mature man that war is fun and Marine training tries to brainwash you into thinking killing people is cool and war is a game. I joined at 19 and they made me feel like I was middle age by surrounding me with a bunch of 17 and 18 year old shitheads. You are gonna be saluting officers younger than you and that is just plain immoral.

Since you ran out why not join as enlisted then do the Meritorious Commissioning Program (MCP) or the Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP) do not go MECP as that will lock you into service obligation beyond what you actually used. Then play leader for a while and if you dont like it kick it as officers dont have an EAS date they can simply resign provided it dont cause mission degredation and you have completed your minimum service requirements.

Go to http://www.marineofficer.com. Request information an a Officer Selection Officer will talk to you. Explore the Marine Officer Program first. Then go talk to an enlisted recruiter or you can go to http://www.marines.com and request info. As soon as you request from either site they will be in touch within 48-72 hours.

Don’t fucking do it! I might have been a POG, but I have a combat action ribbon, and replaced that shit unit that got a PUC for doing absolutely nothing but leave us in that death trap in Sangin. Oh for fuck’s sake, once you go in, your mind becomes mush regardless of your MOS. Ever since I EAS’d, I try to keep personal issues to myself, but then I find myself crying every morning at recurring dreams about watching my team mates die before my eyes. It’s not fucking worth it. You’ll hear people talk about politics, current events and just world news and you’ll be seeing through their bullshit as you stick your dick right into that SIPRNET. It ain’t worth it, don’t fucking join. Your life will change like a bad acid trip.
